We
have used the last day of our 2011 tour for both the joy of cycling in
an alpine environment and a nostalgic visit to Sulden, a village where
my parent and I stayed 45 years ago during summer holidays. It is
clear that the growing importance of winter sports has changed a lot to
Sulden. There are definitely many more hotels and ski lifts, but its
character seems to have survived rather than being declined to a trendy
resort. For Ward only cycling up and down to Sulden was a bit meager. His training for the Marmotte cycling race (Bourg d'Oisans, French Alps, 2-7-2011*) asked for more exercise, hence the additional Matschertal loop. A longer trip would have been possible, but was not advisable given the steadily deteriorating weather (... the Stelvio, yesterday, was enough). * Ward has completed the 174 km / 5000 m height gain Marmotte in 7h19' (official time, without Col du Glandon descent; 7h52 including Glandon descent). An outstanding performance which was rewarded with a gold medal ! |
